FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BOSTON-AREA DETOURS AND ONRAMPS CONFERENCE ANNOUNCED
A much-needed and practical resource created to address the needs of mothers who desire to return to work on their terms
BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ, March 2, 2008 – Bentley College in Waltham, MA will host “Detours&OnRamps” May 15, 2008.
The Detours&OnRamps Forum is a one-day conference designed to address the needs and issues of mothers evaluating their decisions to work full-time, part-time, or from home. Through networking with fellow working mothers, discussions with the companies leading the way in solutions for working mothers, expert panels, and dynamic sessions on some of the most common dilemmas faced by working mothers, the Detours &OnRamps Forum provides an opportunity for women to meet and examine their choices. The conference is designed as a practical resource for working mothers, working women considering motherhood, and mothers taking some time off from a career but planning to re-join the workforce in some form.
One of the most talked about issues in the workplace today is the concept of on-ramping, the process of resuming a career after weeks, months, or even years off. More than 50% of women who return to work after having a child leave within several months, citing job dissatisfaction as the number one cause. The working environment is in the midst of a profound shift—with options that include flex-time, job sharing, compressed work weeks, and longer periods of leave—but is everyone feeling the change, and how can women who desire to return to work benefit from these changes?
Forum co-founder (and working mother) Meghan McCartan says, “In looking for resources and answers, we found a notable lack of solutions on what is clearly a hot topic of discussion, and so the solutions were up to us.”
The first conference was held in October of 2007 in the New York City area, and over 85 women attended. Managing Partner Meghan McCartan, who won an Avon “Hello Tomorrow” fund award for her work to empower women, plans to hold events in several cities throughout the year, but Boston is the first.
