Singapore -- It is no secret that on average, a US medical traveler to Singapore pays a mere third of what a similar treatment would cost back home. With burgeoning domestic healthcare costs, such savings provide ample motivation for self-insured US corporations to jump on the medical travel bandwagon. Leading the way is Snow Summit Mountain Resort, which turned to PlanetHospital, a pioneer medical outsourcing company, to help bring down healthcare costs for its 200 employees and 85 dependents. Mr Rudy Rupak, PlanetHospital's president and co-founder discloses, "Their employees experienced a 9% increase in healthcare contributions while the employer saw a double digit growth in premiums. So they were trying to find ways to lower their healthcare costs."Outlining the deal struck in October 2007 with the 58-year old ski resort, he says, "The arrangement is a cost-less benefit that employers include in their benefits package in which there are no upfront or per monthly fees. We are only compensated on utilization of our services."Mr Rupak, aware of its excellent healthcare services, identified Singapore as an ideal medical destination.Leading the way is Snow Summit Mountain Resort, which turned to PlanetHospital, a pioneer medical outsourcing company, to help bring down healthcare costs for its 200 employees and 85 dependents. Mr Rudy Rupak, PlanetHospital's president and co-founder discloses, "Their employees experienced a 9% increase in healthcare contributions while the employer saw a double digit growth in premiums. So they were trying to find ways to lower their healthcare costs."Benefits Manager, 27-year old Ms Jamie Pecoraro, adds, "When they hear about the quality healthcare, cutting-edge technology and impressive hospitals in Singapore, I'm sure they will seriously consider heading there for treatment." The World Health Organization (WHO) ranked Singapore's healthcare system best in Asia and sixth worldwide. By comparison, the US is ranked 37th. A multifaceted medical hub with high standards of patient services, research, development and training, Singapore's well-established medical infrastructure also boasts 13 JCI-accredited medical facilities staffed by doctors trained in the best centers around the world. Impressive as accolades and achievements read, Director of Healthcare Services at the Singapore Tourism Board, Dr Jason Yap, notes the importance of such educational and exploratory visits. "Having never traveled out of the US, many Americans are apprehensive about going to a foreign land for healthcare. So, when representatives see first-hand how modern, safe and advanced Singapore is, we believe they will then reassure their employees who will feel more comfortable about coming here."Ms Pecoraro asserts, "It's important to know what to expect before sending somebody to a country none of us have been to before, let alone for medical treatment. Many who don't know much about Singapore will be pleased to know that English is widely used there."Language aside, Ms Hanft feels that safety, cleanliness and food remain obstacles for many when presented with alternative healthcare destinations. This, she feels, is where Singapore has an advantage. She declares, "You feel safe all the time, it's clean, the people are friendly, the food is great and it's an easily accessible and convenient city. Americans will love it." Dr Yap adds, "Visitors never have to worry about wars, social unrest, riots or natural disasters in Singapore. This provides peace of mind, which in essence, is what international patients need most when they are unwell."During their four-day stay, both Ms Hanft and Ms Pecoraro visited several leading private and public hospital facilities in Singapore including Parkway Health, National Healthcare Group (NHG), and SingHealth Group, sat through doctors' presentations, and even underwent a comprehensive health screening, all of which impressed the pair. "I was blown away by the cutting-edge procedures at Gleneagles Hospital of Parkway Health such as the limb-lengthening, stem-cell research and liver transplants. They spared no expense on equipment and the hospital care was first-class," reveals Ms Pecoraro. She adds, "We also toured the teaching facility at NHG's National University Hospital and were highly impressed, especially since this hospital also offers subsidized care to the locals. The doctors at the children's unit were also great with kids. My favorite was the Tan Tock Seng Hospital, also under NHG. It had a unique feel and attention was paid to all medical needs as well as it being a clean, modern and beautiful facility." On the SingHealth establishments, Ms Hanft notes, "The Singapore General Hospital was an immense facility and the accomplishments of the Singapore National Eye Center, in particular, were astounding. I think Americans will appreciate the long list of US partnerships with the place such as the Jules Stein Institute and Johns Hopkins."Commenting on the KK Women's and Children's Hospital, she says, "The compassion and dedication of the doctors and staff were obvious traits, and important especially since they deal with lots of cancer patients, both women and children." Mr Rupak says, "I hope Darla and Jamie will sing praises of Singapore's healthcare to their employers so that when the next employee needs any major medical attention, he or she will seriously consider going there." PlanetHospital is presently fine-tuning details with two other corporations, one with 600 employees and another 4,000 strong, to join Snow Summit in looking to Singapore as a healthcare destination for their employees.About SingaporeMedicine(www.singaporemedicine.com)SingaporeMedicine is a multi-agency partnership committed to strengthening Singapore's position as Asia's leading medical hub, and promoting it as a world-class destination for advanced patient care. The Healthcare Services Division at the Singapore Tourism Board spearheads the international marketing of Singapore's healthcare services and development of service delivery for international patients. In 2007, over 400,000 patients traveled to Singapore for healthcare, a number that is expected to grow to one million by 2012.
Bangkok, Thailand (Netsweets), November 15, 2008 -- Targeted for completion in December 2008, the TelePresence system will provide sophisticated video conferencing equipment enabling parties in different office locations to communicate as if they are in the same conference room. The new system will initially connect the company's two major business centres in Beijing and Guangzhou, before its roll-out to the remaining mainland offices. The installation of TelePresence in the company's mainland offices is part of a regional roll-out undertaken by Datacraft across the region, which will ultimately see daily links established among all the company's offices in Asia as well as its global operations."China is becoming the most important manufacturing hub and consumer marketplace for our client. In order to successfully execute complex business processes over multiple cities across China and internationally, it is essential for the company to have access to the most effective collaboration tools available today," said Shum Mew Toong, Datacraft's General Manager, ChinaEach venue will be linked by IP Telephony and will feature Cisco TelePresence 3000 equipment, 65" high definition plasma screens, microphones and cameras in a combination that will contribute to a dramatically life-like a4same room' meeting experience. The realistic images and video clarity of TelePresence enables participants to clearly see colleagues' expressions and movements, while the CD-quality audio allows every spoken word to be clearly heard. This compares favourably with earlier conferencing solutions which suffered from poor quality connections, distorted sound and frequent dropped lines - factors that limited widespread use of conferencing services until now. This solution is well suited for a wide variety of day-to-day tasks such as long distance point-to-point or multi-point video conference calls, customer service interaction, troubleshooting in remote locations; sales demonstrations, design collaboration and staff meetings."Today, rapid international expansion is common place for many successful multinational companies and TelePresence is increasingly seen as an essential tool for these cutting edge businesses to maintain close control of their vast operations. More importantly, TelePresence plays a major role in supporting product innovation, bolstering collaboration with partners and customers and speeding decision-making, it also helps to improve quality of life and serves to minimize the company's carbon footprint, by reducing business travel," added Shum.About DatacraftDatacraft is a wholly owned subsidiary of Dimension Data plc (LSE:DDT), a US$3.8 billion leading global IT solutions and services provider.
Bangkok, Thailand (NetSweets) November 15, 2008 - Bangkok Hospital recently acquired an Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) machine, the latest and most popular tool for cancer treatment in the West. The acquisition puts it ahead of major hospitals in the UK and US, many of which are still to acquire the technology. One of the major problems with conventional radiotherapy is that surrounding organs can be functionally impaired. Like chemotherapy, conventional radiotherapy can be especially hard on patients' quality of life. It even allows patients to be treated as outpatients, due to the decreased side-effect levels.Other benefits of IMRT include:a4Lower radiation exposure for healthy tissuea4Enables concurrent chemotherapy and radiotherapy, as the radiation is so well targeteda4Reduces the chance of cancer recurring a4Reduces the cost of cancer treatmenta4Long term side effects are virtually nonexistentDr Chanawat Tesavibul is a radiation oncology specialist at Bangkok Hospital, and has been practicing medicine for the last 22 years. He is excited about having this treatment option for his patients, "I think we'll be seeing much happier cancer patients, and also be seeing them for a much shorter time before they return to a normal life. The IMRT machine puts Bangkok Hospital ahead of the game - it really is the future of radiation oncology".IMRT was recently used to cure a 12-month old baby of her Rhabdomyosarcoma, a tumor of the muscle. With the tumor sitting between her hip bones, traditional radiation therapy would have caused her to have the pelvis of a one-year old baby. "It's unimaginable. [If we didn't have IMRT,] We probably would just not treat her, and then she would be at high risk of dying from her cancer," her doctor in the US said. However, the same IMRT equipment that Bangkok Hospital now has was used to ensure the girl's normal hip growth, and the destruction of her cancer.About Bangkok Hospital Medical Center:Bangkok Hospital Medical Center (BMC) is one of the most technologically sophisticated hospitals in the world today.
Bangkok, Thailand (NetSweets) November 9, 2008 -- Thailand in Style launches a collection of diverse options available for its clients to get from A to B in Thailand and Indochina. Forming a chapter of a journey or an entire itinerary their collection is designed to offer a personal and intimate perspective of Thailand, her people and scenery. From romantic to nostalgic, adventurous to bespoke, Thailand in Style's imaginative overland transfer options bring their clients well below cloud level on a series of authentic and memorable journeys.Thailand is a country renowned for the gentle and friendly nature of its people, the standards of service, its diversity of cultures and stunning scenery. In today's fast-paced world, though, travelers tend to opt subconsciously for short-haul commercial flights when transferring from one destination to another as part of an itinerary in Thailand."In creating individual travel plans for each of our clients, our objective is to offer the inquisitive traveler the most unique and stylish itineraries, accommodation and activities in Thailand and Indochina" says Miguel Cunat, CEO of Thailand in Style. "Rice barges, seaplanes, luxury trains and private aircraft provide interesting alternatives to mainstream transfer options, making the means of getting there as interesting and as unforgettable as the holiday itself."One of the most authentic ways to see the real Thailand is by river, passing slowly through rural scenery and passed riverbank communities whose way of life has changed little for decades. While most opt for a half-day, whistle-stop tour by car of the ancient ruins of Ayutthaya near Bangkok, Thailand in Style offers the opportunity to journey by converted teak Rice Barge, the old ladies of the Chao Phraya River; seeing Thailand by River on an overnight trip up to the ancient capital.Venturing to northern Thailand, the mighty Mekong separates Thailand from Laos offering the chance to combine off-the-beaten-track trekking by foot and elephant-back with a cruise aboard a luxury timber river barge through remote mountainous stretches of the Mekong River to Luang Prabang; a nostalgic cruise with breathtaking scenery and a journey that could be incorporated within Thailand in Style's Thailand and Laos In Style Itinerary. Many of Thailand's rivers offer varying standards of river rafting with either bamboo or inflatable rafts and river kayaking which, season dependent, can be quite an adrenalin rush. Ultimately these rivers reach the sea and Thailand's 3,219km of coastline, studded with off-lying islands presents yet more cruising opportunities aboard private yachts, Chinese junks or specialized live-aboard boats for multi-day diving trips and deep sea fishing; on an exclusive basis or shared. For the less nautically inclined Thailand in Style takes to the road with a wide assortment of chauffeured cars available for standard airport hotel transfers from basic sedans through to mid- and top-of-the-range BMW's and Mercedes Benz vehicles as well as luxury mini vans. These cars can also be booked for private excursions including day trips and overnight trips. From Bangkok, examples may include trips to Kanchanaburi and the river Kwai, visiting waterfalls and wineries, floating markets and historic palaces as well as professionally orchestrated golfing days. For the adventurous and brave, motorcycles provide a truly down-to-earth insight into the real Thailand. Choose where you want to go, at what pace and when you want to stop. Opt for continent conquering BMW's or tackle the jungles of the North astride a nimble dirt bike. Get down and dirty by day arriving back at your hotel for a hot shower and a delicious meal accompanied with wine. Thailand in Style's motorcycle adventures are lead by seasoned professionals and the bikes are all professionally maintained.A departure from hair-raising motorcycle antics, Thailand in Style offers one of the world's most nostalgic train journeys aboard the Eastern Orient Express that plies the tracks from Singapore's colonial train station through Butterworth and onto Bangkok; an experience of traveling in the style of another era. Clients become pampered passengers as the train slips past palm trees and rock karsts, lush jungle and isolated villages."It's great to be confined with no choices to make and no need to rush around and see things," said a British couple celebrating a 40th Birthday aboard the Eastern Orient Express. "For the first time in ages we had some real time together, time to talk. It's very classy; very romantic."Thailand in Style has also sought out more nostalgic and romantic low-level air transport from sea planes ready to whisk clients off to distant islands to helicopter sightseeing tours and transfers and Hot Air Balloon soirees. For those clients that are really pushed for time, private jets can also be provided to ensure an entirely seamless experience."In an age when speed (and 24/7 internet access) is everything, a growing number of our clients relish the chance to slow down and switch off - to stop worrying about getting from A to B as quickly as possible, but instead focus on enjoying the journey", says Miguel Cunat.Thailand in Style fervently believes that the journey itself can be a wonderfully enriching learning experience where clients have the opportunity to encounter true rural Thai values and heritage.
Singapore (NetSweets) October 29, 2008 -- Singapore has embarked on a cell-based clinical trial that may have far-reaching implications for future cancer research and treatments. The trial, currently ongoing, involves up to 35 patients of advanced nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) and will likely be completed in late-2009, says Dr Toh Han Chong, Senior Consultant, Department of Medical Oncology at the National Cancer Centre (NCC), Singapore.Explaining the ground-breaking nature of this trial, Dr Toh says, "What we're doing is to extract T-cells from the patient's own blood, then a4educate' these cells to recognize certain viral proteins. These T-cells will be expanded into large numbers in the lab and returned back to the patients to fight the cancer."T-cells belong to a group of white blood cells (WBCs) called lymphocytes. There are a number of different types of T-cells that act in many ways to identify, directly attack and destroy infectious agents and potentially even cancer cells. Along with other WBCs, they play a major role in the immune system, which guards the body against infection.Likening the entire operation to growing an army, Dr Toh elaborates, "If we see the T-cells as fresh recruits, what we're trying to do is train them up to recognize a specific enemy. Once this is done, we then build up this fighting force from platoon to battalion to division strength. When they reach the battle field, they would know how to a4seek and destroy' the enemy while sparing the innocents in their midst."The T-cell therapy process itself is logistically simple for the patient. All that is needed is about 350 ml of blood, about the volume of a coca-cola can. The culturing of T-cells will take a few months and the programmed new cells will be returned over a series of intravenous infusions. It is hoped that this process, coupled with a course of chemotherapy, will significantly extend survival rates.According to Dr Toh, nasopharyngeal cancer was selected for two reasons: It is the sixth commonest cancer in Singapore, and is endemic in southern China and South East Asia. It also has a detectable weakness - Epstein-Barr related viral proteins are expressed on the surface of NPC cancer cells, which are useful as therapeutic targets.Epstein-Barr virus or EBV is a member of the herpes virus family. Most people become infected with it at some point in their lives. Of those affected, the majority suffer nothing more than mild afflictions, such as fever, sore throat or swollen lymph glands. However, some carriers of the virus eventually develop nasopharyngeal carcinoma, or cancer. To date, only two studies have been done on using T-cells to fight NPC. The first was done by the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, while the second was done in Pavia, Italy. "Singapore is extremely well-placed to perform this trial because NPC is so common in Asia. We can truly become a hub of excellence in this area," says Dr Toh, whose clinical and research team is in frequent contact with the Centre for Cell and Gene Therapy in Houston. "We are very grateful to be partnering the Centre for Cell and Gene Therapy. They are actively involved with us in ramping up capabilities, technologies, clinical trials development using adoptive T-cells to fight NPC. Conventional chemotherapy alone for patients with advanced NPC does not provide a cure. This is an alternative new treatment strategy," said Dr Toh. Dr Toh's team, comprising scientists, clinicians, clinician-scientists, researchers and trained nurses, will build up a bench-to-bedside T-cell therapy facility, which is arguably the only one of its kind in Asia. "T-cell therapy will provide Singapore with a unique opportunity to distinguish ourselves in the region, if not the world. We have the manpower, regulatory framework, infrastructure, the training and the resources, and we are ready to proceed," says Dr Toh.About National Cancer CentreNational Cancer Centre (NCC) offers comprehensive cancer treatment with a highly skilled, multi-disciplinary team comprising medical specialists, nurses, counselors and other paramedical professionals to meet the special needs of cancer patients. The Centre uses the latest technologies in cancer treatment to help patients access proven innovative therapies for the best clinical outcomes.
Singapore (NetSweets) October 7, 2008 -- Home-grown Sirius Medical Innovation ("SMI"), a specialist in thermal-imaging solutions, announced a first collaboration with Singapore's KK Women's and Children's Hospital ("KK Hospital") to conduct clinical trials of its Thermal Imaging Medical System ("TIMS"), which uses ultra-sensitive high-precision infrared thermal imaging cameras to detect breast cancer syndromes. This is the first such system in the world.Supervised by KK Hospital's Head of Diagnostic Imaging, Prof. David A. Stringer, and his team of senior consultants, Phase I of the trials have been completed on more than 300 women patients, who have undergone diagnostic investigation for suspected breast cancer using TIMS, mammography, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging ("MRI"). Results from the Phase I trials have enabled the research team to calibrate the system effectively and develop best practices to facilitate future application of the technology."The initial batch of results have been encouraging, and should the trend continue, the clinical trial here in KK Hospital will serve as an important milestone in developing TIMS as an adjunctive medical diagnostic modality, which when used together with mammography, is expected to greatly heighten the likelihood of breast cancer detection," said Prof. David A. Stringer.SMI and KK Hospital will now move to increase the number of women tested to another 1000 in order to achieve the statistical significance necessary to validate the initial results. Upon successful completion of the trials, KK Hospital plans to offer TIMS as one of the various diagnostic services available for breast cancer detection at its KK Breast Centre - a one-stop medical centre located within KKH which is fully dedicated to looking after breast health."Seeing the potential in TIMS, we started to collaborate with SMI since early February to bring this new life-saving technology to the forefront of breast cancer research and treatment.
Macau (NetSweets) October 2, 2008 - Macau has emerged as the casino capital of Asia and Accor's new Sofitel Macau At Ponte 16 is expecting to win its share of the pot after the hotel's recent grand opening. For those eager to try their hand at a game of blackjack, roulette, or poker, Sofitel Macau's casino offers 270,000 square feet of gaming floor space, housing 150 gaming tables, 5 VIP halls and 320 slot machines.Uniquely located in old downtown Macau, the casino is operated by the Sociedade de Jogos de Macau, the company founded by gaming giant Stanley Ho. At a recent Singapore conference of gaming executives from around the world, the consensus was that Macau's emergence as a global gambling hotspot was just the start of things to come."The major thing that has revolutionized the gaming industry in this part of the world of course is Macau," says Andy Nazarechuk, dean of the Singaporean campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas."Macau is the star in the Asian world when it comes to the gaming industry," he told the delegates.Macau casinos reported revenues of US$9.7 billion in the first seven months of 2008, up 44 percent from the same period a year before. The southern Chinese territory's gaming revenues in 2007 topped US$10 billion for the first time, well ahead of the Las Vegas Strip.Exclusive to high-rollers, the Macau Sofitel offers the The Mansion - luxury accommodation kept specifically for the hotel's gambling aficionados.
Thailand (NetSweets) September 23, 2008 -- Thailand In Style, the Bangkok-based upmarket travel design company, is very pleased to welcome the Four Seasons Tented Camp in Chiang Rai to its collection of unique boutique hotels and villas in Thailand that exude character and are able to accentuate the overall journey experience enjoyed by their discerning travelers."Our objective is to bring the very best of Thailand together in style", says Miguel Cunat, the CEO of Thailand In Style. "We select accommodations for their stunning locations, their attention to detail and service, their eclectic style, their original dining experiences and their design-led interiors and the Four Seasons Tented Camp in the heart of the Golden Triangle near Chiang Rai embraces and surpasses each of these qualities in stylish abundance". With location being the first of Thailand In Style's criteria it is difficult to fault the Four Seasons Tented Camp. The "campsite" in Thailand's far less-traveled north, and accessed only by river boat, is located in Chiang Rai and the legendary Golden Triangle, where three countries-Thailand, Myanmar and Laos-meet at the confluence of the Ruak and Mekong rivers: "If you were doing a foxtrot and stepped forward you'd be in Burma, sideways you'd be in Laos and backwards you'd end up in Thailand," says Ruby Wax, The Independent, 19 July 2008.The "tents", strong, almost rigid structures cantilevered off a vertical cliff, hang over a river in the wilds of northern Thailand overlooking Burma and some stunning river views.Where attention to detail and service is concerned, one would expect a Four Seasons to be of a very high standard but with this their first foray into camping and tents, The Four Seasons have excelled. From the tent's construction, the candle lit elephant walkways and paths, suspension bridges, room facilities, hotel facilities and elephant facilities; the Four Seasons Tented Camp is unrivalled in its attention to detail and service. The concept is unique in Thailand; a very real camping experience which is loosely modeled on Africa's most successful safari lodges: "We've taken away some of the a4hotely' things. There are no televisions and no room service. Camping is about gathering around the campfire." Jason Friedman, General Manager, Four Seasons Tented Camp Chiang Rai.With 160 staff looking after the needs of a maximum of 30 guests the experience is personal; "staff members don't just know your name; after only a day they know your favorite cocktail and how you like your eggs", says a previous guest resident. The tents are equipped with wool throws, air conditioning, central heating, hot water bottles and ankle-length robes. The inclusive mini-bar is stacked with wines, half-bottles of spirits and snacks. Postcards are ready-stamped. Hand-hammered copper baths big enough to fit two, outdoor showers with amazing views and a veranda which is almost as big as the room complete the period aura. With individually themed tents (a4Opium', a4Butterfly', a4Hill tribes' etc) all in soft, clean cream colors, Bill Bensley the camps architect added a design-led approach from the tents themselves with their pyramidal roofs and large, zip-up mosquito-screen a4windows' through to the oversized beds with feather toppers and draped white muslin, the freestanding, hand-hammered bath right down to the toiletries in the bathroom. As for original dining experiences, Thailand In Style rates the Four Seasons Tented Camp as being one its top contenders as dining is treated as an integral part of the Camp's activities. Dining locations change from day-to-day, meal-to-meal as does the menu. Breakfast may be in the main restaurant, it may be presided over by young elephants. Lunch could be a picnic in the jungle followed by afternoon tea and sundown drinks at the Burma Bar and then comes dinner!Campfire meals, Barbecues under the stars or even in the elephant camp, five-course formal meals are some of the original dining experiences to be enjoyed at the Four Seasons Tented Camp.Of the Four Seasons Tented Camp, Travel + Living Magazine commented "If this is jungle living, we're going native" and Jill Hartley of the UK's Observer on Sunday newspaper said, "After 25 years of living in and traveling to the Far East, I'm resolutely unfazed by new-style hotel rooms - but this time I am speechless".For Thailand in Style, The Four Seasons Tented Camp brings to its discerning clients all the perks of camping and none of the cons. The camp scores top marks in each of Thailand in Style's selection criteria; stunning locations, attention to detail and service, eclectic style, original dining experiences and design-led interiors. Add to that authenticity and the Four Seasons Tented Camp becomes an exceptional offering in Thailand in Style's collection of Boutique Hotels and Villas in Thailand.About Thailand In StyleThailand In Style is a Thailand based travel design company that specializes in offering travel consultation and services for clients visiting Thailand and Indochina.
Singapore (NetSweets) September 23, 2008 -- A new spinal fusion technique, known as hybrid fusion, now provides patients with a permanent relief from the pain. Hybrid fusion is a breakthrough for patients, especially younger individuals, as the treatment will no longer be at the expense of their ability to lead an active lifestyle.Launched worldwide in 2007, Raffles Hospital was one of the pioneer users of hybrid fusion in the Asia Pacific. To date, there were nine foreign and local patients who had undergone hybrid fusion at Raffles Hospital. With a short downtime of just five days, patients can now look forward to regaining full mobility faster and experience less pain. Hybrid fusion also protects the adjacent level of the spine from degenerating. This is a crucial advancement in technology as adjacent level degeneration is the long-term effect of the older form of spinal fusion technique.Hybrid fusion involves using a stiff section of a rod to treat the degenerated discs, while a welded flexible section extends further above to offer protection to the adjacent disc. "The flexible part provides about five degrees of motion, sufficient to promote normal motion. Besides preventing problems with a hypermobile disc, the patient experiences less pain. More importantly, the patient is able to resume his or her normal activities quickly," said Dr David Wong, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon of Raffles Hospital.Hypermobile describes the condition when joints move beyond their normal range with little effort, thereby causing instability.According to Dr Wong, an estimated 20 percent of patients who undergo the older form of spinal fusion surgery are at risk of suffering from an adjacent level degeneration or disc disease within the next ten years."When fusion is done, the affected vertebrae become stiff and this lack of motion puts stress on the adjacent vertebra. The adjacent vertebra then becomes hypermobile to compensate for the lack of motion and this causes problems later on," Dr Wong enlightens.Hybrid fusion is unique as it can adapt to multiple disc-degeneration stages. Most importantly, with this new procedure, the risk of adjacent level degeneration and instability, movement restriction and pain down the years is eliminated. This technology is currently pending approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. An earlier form of spinal fusion procedure, without the advantages as described above, costs US$62,000 in the U.S., while hybrid fusion at only US$22,000 is both cheaper and more beneficial.About Raffles HospitalRaffles Hospital, the flagship hospital of Raffles Medical Group, is a 380-bed private tertiary hospital located in the heart of Singapore.
Bangkok, Thailand (Netsweets) September 22, 2008 - Bangkok Hospital Medical Center has announced a new reduced cost package available for coronary artery bypass grafts.Coronary artery bypass grafting is quite a frequent operation in the US, with around 500,000 CABGs (Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts) performed in 2000 alone. This surgery must frequently be performed at short notice, in response to an acute cardiac event such as a myocardial infarction (heart attack). In this procedure, arteries from elsewhere in a patient's body are grafted onto the coronary arteries, allowing an alternative passage for blood to flow through the heart and be pumped around the body. This averts blockages and narrowing caused by coronary artery disease (heart disease).Successful grafts usually last around 10-15 years. Following this, the procedure may need to be repeated. Bangkok Hospital makes this repeat grafting much more affordable with their new coronary artery bypass graft package. Bangkok Hospital has announced a cut-price package for patients who require coronary artery bypass grafting surgery. This package includes:a4Use of the operating rooma4Bed in the Cardiac Care Unit for 2 nightsa4A standard single room for 5 nights, including nursing fee, meals, room rate and room service)a4Surgery performed by the best surgeons, anesthesiologists and cardiac rehabilitators.a4Cross-matched blood prepared prior to the operation. The package is being offered at 480,000 BT, around US$14,400 at current conversion rates. It is available until the end of September, 2008. The package is expected to be a great boon to overseas patients, who typically must have the surgery at short notice and do not have sufficient notice to save the required funds, which can be up to ten times higher in their home countries. Bangkok Hospital Medical Center incorporates the first private heart hospital in Thailand. It was built on the Bangkok Heart Institute, which was established in 1989.The team at the Bangkok Heart Hospital includes:a4Experienced adult and pediatric cardiologistsa4Cardiac surgeonsa4Cardiac anesthesiologistsa4Cardiac rehabiltiaition physiciansa4RadiologistsWorking experience for these staff has come from internationally recognized hospitals in countries such as the US, Australia and Japan.Off-pump surgery is one of the cutting edge technologies in use at the Bangkok Heart Hospital. In this procedure, a patient's heart can remain beating while being worked on, and the heart-lung life support system is not required. This greatly reduces risk for heart patients, and creates better post-operative outcomes.Bangkok Heart Hospital has treated more than 40,000 cardiac outpatients, and has performed more than 1100 cardiac surgeries to date.

1 Vote(s)

Hong Kong (NetSweets) September 13, 2008 - The global demand for commodities is surging at an unprecedented rate and the soon-to-open Hong Kong Mercantile Exchange is poised to capitalize on the trend, financial consultancy Zetland reports. Open only to institutional investors, the HKMEx expects to start trading in the first quarter of next year, pending approval from the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission, likely by the end of 2008. The new exchange will operate on an electronic platform during the Asian hours of 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., but will eventually extend its operation to 23 hours a day. The exchange will be headed by oil industry veteran Barry Cheung. The former Deputy Chairman of the Titan Petrochemicals Group said the timing is right. China's role in setting prices for petroleum and other raw materials is growing, and the move aims to capitalize on demand, particularly in Asia, for commodities, says Cheung. Commodity trading and consumption in China and Asia have been growing at an unprecedented speed over the past few years, while at the same time there are insufficient hedging mechanisms for these products, Cheung noted. "The exchange will provide more price relevancy that better reflects mainland China's underlying supply and demand and enable Chinese traders to have more pricing power in the world's commodities markets," Cheung said. The HKMEx will initially sell fuel oil contracts in U.S. dollars for delivery to the mainland, where it is often used in the shipping and industrial sectors. Potential investors include global investment banks Barclays Capital, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch, as well as end-users such as the Noble Group and major mainland companies, including Citi Group and China Resources.China, the world's second-largest oil consumer behind the United States, currently uses Singapore futures as a reference for fuel-oil bargaining."What we're offering is a product not currently available on the market: fuel oil contracts that are freely traded in U.S. dollars and delivered in China," Cheung said. The report by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council is one of many carried each month by Hong Kong-based Zetland Fiduciary Group on its comprehensive website.

1 Vote(s)

Bangkok, Thailand (Netsweets) September 15, 2008 - A collaboration between Bangkok Hospital Medical Center, Theravitae Ltd and the University of Pittsburgh has created a new stem cell therapy treatment option at Bangkok's world-class hospital and medical facility.Patients with heart damage or heart failure can now be treated at Bangkok Heart Hospital (a division of Bangkok Hospital Medical Centre) with stem cells from their own peripheral blood tissue. Stem cell therapy involves the use of partially differentiated or undifferentiated cells to treat damaged tissue in several areas of the body. Their damaged heart muscle can be repaired without the need for tissue transplants or mechanical insertions. The stem cells used are known as angiogenic precursor cells. These cells are designated as unipotent, that is, they have the potential only to become one type of mature cell. However, their undeveloped status means that the body can utilize and reproduce them in a way it cannot with mature cells. Cell selection and expansion using this method takes about a week - thousands of times less what it might take to find a suitable donor for heart tissue. Magnetic resonance imaging, a thoracoscopic camera and keyhole surgery are used to administer the stem cell product directly to the damaged area of the heart. The surgery involves a small incision being made in the left side of the chest, and a thoracoscopic camera being inserted into the thoracic cavity. The cells are injected directly into the cardiac muscle at the point of damage, which is located using an MRI. The technology also has the potential to be able to grow new heart tissue from a person's own stem cells, and Bangkok Hospital is leading the world in research in this area. The new treatment option at Bangkok Heart Hospital means that medical tourists have a less invasive, more natural and scientifically advanced method of treatment for coronary artery disease and heart failure at a world-leading facility. Bangkok Hospital is accredited by TEMOS (Telemedicine for the Mobile Society), an organization which assures international travelers of the quality and safety standards of hospitals worldwide. It also involves a patient's home doctor in the treatment and recovery process. Ms. Gallardo will enhance the hotel group's commitment to efficient water and energy use, sustainable resource management, and "green" programmes in the rooms and food and beverage divisions.Ms. Gallardo believes that a critical aspect of a company's social responsibility is to generate revenue to allow it to give back to the community. "Initiatives must be focused and sustainable, designed to create jobs and genuine growth," she says. One of Ms. Gallardo's first steps will be to conduct a CSR and Sustainability 101 Training Programme for all hotel employees to create committed CSR ambassadors. In this course, she will link the issue of sustainability to the realities of climate change."It is important to present the effects of global warming in a local context," says Ms. Gallardo. "The team must have a common understanding of how receding coastlines mean threats to our food security, and that resource scarcity is our personal and professional business. They must be aware of the reasons behind hotel initiatives in order to be fully committed to their goals." Ms. Gallardo brings with her a wealth of experience. She has worked over six years with various NGOs and development companies such as The Asia Foundation and United Nations Development Program. From projects to clean-up aquatic areas and preserve wildlife sanctuaries, to innovative practices in managing hazardous waste, the resort has received environmental awards by the Department of Tourism, Department of Energy and Natural Resources, and the Mother Nature Award, the highest national honour given by the Pollution Control Association of the Philippines. Edsa Shangri-La was the first Philippine hotel to be ISO 14001 certified, for its compliance with the strict measures of the International Environment System, followed by Makati Shangri-La and Shangri-La's Mactan Resort and Spa.
