SAN FRANCISCO, CA (October 7, 2008) - When acclaimed sculptor and Academy of Art University School of Fine Art Sculpture Director Peter Schifrin participated in the 1984 Olympics, he would have never guessed his teammate would commission a monumental sculpture from him nearly 25 years later. But that is exactly what happened. "Full Sky," a soaring bronze figure reaching 20 feet high, punctuates a soul-stirring 360-degree hilltop view in a remote upstate New York landscape. The work invigorates universal, raw energy by its testament to the simplicity of the human form. "Full Sky" is also a testament to the power of art to not only compliment, but to brilliantly elevate already spectacular architecture. In rural Dutchess County, NY, the award-winning architecture firm Thomas Phifer and Partners designed an ultra-modern home, creating a magnificent observation post to the surrounding untouched nature. After seeing Schifrin's recently published monograph love & fear, along with Schifrin's reputation for creating soaring and compellingly personal sculpture commissions in California, the client asked Schifrin to visit his "farm." As the visionary for this unique property, the patron, who prefers to remain anonymous, asked Schifrin "to create moments of calm, wonder, and beauty" for a landscape he loves, adding, "the rest is up to you." Through the yearlong commission process, Schifrin was assisted by two Academy of Art University School of Fine Art Sculpture students Ah Young Jeon and Zachary Roberts, who received course credit towards their fine art degree. AAU student Alexander Toy and AAU alumnus Tom Patella also aided Schifrin in the final stages of production. With a nod to the clean, geometric forms of the home's architecture, Schifrin created a human form that emotively embraces the visual harmony of symmetry coupled with imperfect human qualities. "Full Sky" reveals physical evidence of Schifrin's active sculpting techniques, simultaneously honoring the living human energy within us all. These elements include the unrefined, in-process marks used to create the work in clay, which Schifrin showcases in the final bronze form. "I love the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi: perfectly imperfect," says Schifrin. "I believe we are all flawed and yet perfect in our imperfection. 'Full Sky' captures this human predicament."In close proximity to the client's home, "Full Sky" literally frames the boundless view of the sky with outstretched, welcoming arms, and an intriguing small figure placed high atop one hand. The implications for significance in a work that will outlive many generations to come are endless. As Peter Morrow Meyer, the landscape architect for the 250-acre site shares: "[The] work is spectacular. It evokes a very spiritual sense upon arrival and lends something truly distinctive to the space that had not yet existed." The "Full Sky" project also gave Schifrin the opportunity to reflect on the intersection of his private commission work with his role as a teacher and mentor at the Academy of Art University's distinguished School of Fine Art Sculpture: "Over the past few years, I have been fortunate to work professionally with numerous students from AAU. They are so well trained and have such excellent discipline. It is lots of fun and truly an honor to create and problem solve with them." Schifrin's next opportunity to collaborate with an Academy of Art University Fine Art Sculpture graduate is just around the corner. Schifrin has invited recent MFA alumnus and current AAU Site Specific Public Sculpture Instructor David Duskin to accompany him back to Dutchess County. Together as artistic partners, Duskin and Schifrin will create a new sculpture proposal for the same patron. Schifrin has succeeded in achieving the loftiest goal of any artist: to have someone invest their personal resources in instilling their viewpoint and artistry into the most personal of spaces. In the words of the client, a person who knew Schifrin as not an artist, but an Olympian, "'Full Sky' is truly inspiring and utterly beautiful." About Academy of Art University, San FranciscoWith over 13,000 students, Academy of Art University is the nation's largest private art and design university.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (September 25, 2008) - San Francisco will soon become an international site for peace pilgrimage, by housing the sole scale replica in the world of Saint Francis of Assisi's famed Porziuncola, his beloved stone chapel in Italy. On September 27, 2008 the National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi's Porziuncola Nuova, embodying the important first phase of San Francisco's Renaissance Project, will be unveiled to the public by Cardinal William Levada and Angela Alioto, devoted project director, past President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, acclaimed trial lawyer and member of Saint Francis' Third Order. Across from the Porziuncola Nuova is a stunning original mural created by Academy of Art University School of Fine Art Painting graduate students, based on School of Giotto frescoes found in the Santa Chiara Church in Assisi. Under the incisive artistic direction of master muralist Angela Tirrell, Academy of Art University MFA Painting students Jonathan Ahn, Ross Bowns, Nick Kiripolsky, Manar Laham, Sunghoon Lee, and Jason Zampol have created a richly detailed mural, paying homage to the master of medieval art whose work chronicled and celebrated St. Francis' life.In 2005 Angela Alioto and then Archbishop William Levada partnered to save the National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi from the tragedy of an inevitable sale, and committed themselves and the church to establishing an international site of pilgrimage for all people who believe in St. Francis and his principles. Alioto then asked Academy of Art University President Elisa Stephens to include the expertise of the school's fine art students to create an original mural on the entry wall facing the Porziuncola Nuova, for which School of Fine Art Graduate Director Mark Tennant selected six immensely talented MFA Painting students. In addition, the Academy of Art University secured professional commission muralist and fine artist Angela Tirrell to lead the mural from design to completion."Elisa Stephens and her Academy of Art University is San Franciscan," shares Angela Alioto. "Elisa is doing a wonderful thing for our city: the Academy of Art University is educating thousands of young artists, and they are a tremendous resource for our city. I am thrilled to have such talented MFA painting students contribute to the Shrine." THE ACADEMY OF ART UNIVERSITY MURAL & TEAM OF MFA STUDENTSGracing the entrance to the Luogo di Santa Chiara, the building housing the Porziuncola Nuova, the Academy of Art University mural was created through the design, transferring, and painting contributions of the six participating MFA students and the leading instruction of master muralist Angela Tirrell. The student team moved from preliminary meetings with Alioto to the final touch-ups of gold leaf with unwavering dedication and discipline, devoting countless curriculum hours alongside Tirrell. The mural project also served as the ultimate learning experience for the commissioner-artist relationship. As AAU MFA student Jason Zampol states: "Homework and teachers do not compare with a client who wants a big job done fast and also beautifully executed."The team researched medieval motifs and created the first ornamental banding: the linked stars and complex checkerboard patterns framing the mural and central arch. Sunghoon Lee masterminded the beautiful digital elevation and Nick Kiripolsky refined the impressive scale of the design. Parisian trained Jonathan Ahn made samples for the gold leaf stars, sun, and moon emblazoning the entry door, along with faux semi-precious stones. Manar Laham made vital contributions to the mixing of brilliant colors hours before the critical design presentation to Angela Alioto. Jason Zampol mapped out much of the decorative banding, as well as applying the glorious heavenly blue sky. Ross Bowns valiantly met an appeal for extra help. "With their willing, intelligent presence, the student team quickly mastered the complexity of the project and completed this work of mysterious and hallowed beauty," says Tirrell. Tirrell offers a visual description of the finished Academy of Art University work: "We hope the viewer will feel exalted and freed. The structure of the mural with its many vertical bands is intended to draw the eye upward. Not only do the tall green arches point to the rich blue field of heaven with 33 gold leaf stars, symbolizing Christ's age at his crucifixion, but a band of arrow-like chevrons also guides the viewer's eye to heaven. Over the Entry Door to the Shrine, in Florentine, Burmese, and German gold leaf, the Medieval Sun, St. Francis' symbol, and the Moon, St. Claire's symbol, blaze below the heavens drawing us to eternity. The beautiful gold leaf and trompe l'oeil semi-precious stone text band framing the door proclaims Pax et Bonum, St. Francis' habitual greeting. The visitor will also read St. Francis' own translated words: "I want you all in paradise.""I am immensely proud of the dedication and artistic mastery the Academy of Art University's MFA Painting students have shown throughout their work on this spectacular mural tribute to Saint Francis," says Dr. Elisa Stephens, President of the Academy of Art University. "It is a deep honor for the Academy of Art University to have an artistic hand in this sacred and internationally significant sanctuary."OPENING OF THE PORZIUNCOLA NUOVAThe Porziuncola Nuova and Academy of Art University Mural are housed in the Luogo di Santa Chiara at the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, 624 Vallejo Street, San Francisco, CA 94133. The site will open to the public on September 27, 2008 at 2PM. Tickets are also being sold for a special opening and blessing ceremony on September 27, 2008 at 9:30AM. The service will include a blessing of the Porziuncola Nuova, mass by Archbishop Niederaurer and Cardinal William Levada, and a special prayer sung by Phantom of the Opera star Fran D'Ambrosio. The Renaissance Project also ensures the preservation of the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi as a national landmark and historical treasure. Further information is available at http://www.shrinerenewal.org. The Porziuncola Nuova will be open to the public Tuesdays through Sundays, from 10AM to 6PM.
The Academy of Art University showcases the striking creative talents of two MFA 2008 graduates from the Schools of Fine Art Painting and Photography this month at its 625 Sutter Street Gallery in the heart of downtown San Francisco. Jean Elston and Debbie Nguyen each present bodies of work masterfully echoing representational form, while simultaneously infusing extraordinary elements of abstract and conceptual artistry. Recent Academy of Art University School of Fine Art Painting MFA graduate Jean Elston imparts an astonishing vivacity of color in her modern approach to impressionistic portraits of blooming flowers. Often combining startling vantage points with a far-reaching color spectrum, Elston's paintings serve as poetic meditations on the delicate exuberance of nature's bounty. "My work dramatically conveys nature, in this case flowers, through the use of light and shadow, and unique compositional angles," says Elston.Debbie Nguyen, a 2008 alumna of the Academy of Art University Graduate School of Photography, offers a remarkable collection of engaging, self-portrait photographs subtly alluding to a realm beyond representational imagery. Nguyen's series of images ruminate on the ideal and soul of feminine beauty through an innovative patchwork motif effect. Nguyen finds a powerful artistic voice in the visual intersection between intimacy and mystery firmly imbedded in her work. "The goal is to create a dual aesthetic that alludes to the sinuous curves and soft textures of the female form, but is removed and mysterious," shares Nguyen. The Academy of Art University's 625 Sutter Street Gallery is located at 625 Sutter Street, San Francisco, CA 94102 and is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8AM to 5PM and Saturdays from 10AM to 5PM. The collections of work by Jean Elson and Debbie Nguyen will be on view through June 30, 2008. All Academy of Art University galleries are nonprofit institutions, with 35% of proceeds from the sale of artwork benefiting the Student Scholarship Fund and the remainder received by the artist.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (April 18, 2008) - Fluently imparting a naturalist's passion for untarnished landscape and a seasoned artist's agility in rendering the classical essence of the human figure, Academy of Art University recent MFA graduate Hyeong-Gon Kim harnesses the full prowess of his craft in his sublime oil paintings. The Academy's 625 Sutter Street Gallery, in the heart of San Francisco's downtown gallery district, devotes its exhibition space this month to an exquisite collection of Kim's artwork. Emphasizing the delightful ability to be momentarily transported by the visual splendor of his idyllic landscapes, Kim shares, "The ability to create another reality on canvas is what motivates me to paint." By making painting his "life and passion," Kim brings to light visions of pure grace to admirers of the tranquil nature of his work.During his studies at the Academy of Art University Kim received several coveted accolades for his artwork, including the Director's Choice Award in Figure Painting at the Academy's 2007 Annual Spring Show and First Prize in Landscape Painting at the Academy's 2006 Annual Spring Show, a central point for recruiting artistic talent each year on the west coast.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (March 19, 2008) - Extraordinary fashion and graphic design highlights from the Academy of Art University exhibit "JUNK MAIL: From Debris to Design" travel to Oakland's Frank H. Ogawa Plaza and StopWaste.Org Headquarters this April, infusing an artistic edge to citywide Earth Day celebrations. The awe-inspiring fashions and resourcefully constructed design displays bring a powerful call to action to the shocking fact 100 million trees are expired solely for junk mail in the United States every year. The Academy of Art University, the City of Oakland, and StopWaste.Org are joining forces with the Bay Area Recycling Outreach Coalition (BayROC) to reduce not only junk mail consumption, but also production. Utilizing junk mail retrieved from San Francisco mailboxes, students from the Academy's Schools of Fashion, Fine Art Sculpture, Graphic Design, and Industrial Design created dozens of imaginative artworks ranging from fashions delicately crafted with credit card offers to striking statements of environmental impact shining from inventive shadow boxes. "JUNK MAIL: From Debris to Design" encourages consumers to fight back against an insidious industry which cuts down 17 trees for each ton of junk mail. With the average American adult receiving and disposing of approximately 41 pounds of generally unwanted and unopened advertising material each year, the energy used to produce and dispose of junk mail exceeds 2.8 million cars. "Academy of Art University student creations on exhibit in 'JUNK MAIL: From Debris to Design' provide outstanding proof of the leading role artists and designers can take in motivating people to create healthy changes to reduce consumption of and safeguard previous environmental resources," says Academy of Art University President Elisa Stephens. Highlights from "JUNK MAIL: From Debris to Design" will be on view at Oakland's Dalziel Building Lobby, located at 250 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza next to Oakland City Hall, from April 7th through 25th. A concurrently running exhibit will be showcased at the eco-friendly StopWaste.Org Headquarters, featuring the highest possible LEED rating and located at 1537 Webster Street, Oakland, CA, 94612, from April through September 2008. StopWaste.Org is dedicated to achieving the most environmentally sound solid waste management and resource conservation program for the people of Alameda County and is a national leader in producing effective solutions that reduce the waste of natural resources.Further information is available at www.academyart.edu and www.StopWaste.Org.
