Houston - Sara Brook, owner of Dessert Gallery Bakery & Caf, headquartered here, has been selected the 2008 Women in Business Champion of the Year in Houston by the U.S. Small Business Administration."To be honored as Women in Business Champion of the Year is especially meaningful to me," said Brook. "I am very grateful for the support and opportunities I have been afforded as a result of my participation in both the SBA and WBEA and I am a strong advocate of both programs." Brook, a 5th-generation Houstonian, launched her first dessert business, The Executive Sweet, when she was 21 years old. The company flourished from 1983 to 1988 until Brook sold it and one week later started "Sara Brook Desserts, Inc." in the kitchen of the former River Oaks Grill. Over time, after repeated requests for the chocolate dip which she used for her famous hand-dipped chocolate chunk cookies, Brook created "The Great Chocolate Cover-Up." and decided to devote full time to marketing and selling the product through nationwide specialty and gourmet food stores. In 1992 she sold the company and acted as a consultant to the new owners for 2 years. In 1995, Brook launched Dessert Gallery Bakery & Caf, which was quickly touted as Houston's premier dessert bakery. Today the company is consistently recognized for having the "Best Desserts in Houston" in a wide variety of publications. In 2001, Brook received the prestigious "Pastry Chef of the Year" award at the Houston Culinary Awards, presented by My Table magazine. "My businesses have always been a family affair, first with help from my parents, then my grandmother and now my daughter Jen," said Brook. That family also extends to Brook's employees, some of whom have been with Dessert Gallery for 13+ years and several of whom were hired through the YMCA refugee settlement program. Today, the woman-owned enterprise includes three retail locations in the Houston area as well as a Houston-based commissary. The company now employs over 60 people and ships desserts nationwide. Brook is a graduate of Bellaire High School and The University of Texas. She will receive the SBA Women in Business Champion Award on May 12 at the Small Business Awards Luncheon at the Marriott Westchase, 2801 Briarpark Drive, sponsored by the Houston SCORE Chapter, a resource partner of the SBA.
