With Jamaica Plain’s Milky Way hotspot scheduled to be changing venues in less than a year, four bands are enthusiastic about spending some stage time in one of Boston’s premiere venues for Live Music. Friday, May 30th will mark a global experience at the Milky Way Lounge for lovers of Poetry, World music, and Hip-hop. Beginning at 9pm national award winning poet and Nigerian vocalist Iyeoka Ivie Okoawo will be opening the Rock by Funk Series, showcasing her poetry and music with her Funk and Blues Tribe.
“I’m thrilled to be sharing the stage with The Press Project, Regie Gibson and Paula Fuga! When I first decided to organize this RBF Series my goal was to put together a line-up of Live Music and artists that I would go see solo. So Friday nite I plan on playing my heart out then kicking back and enjoying the fierce energy and phenomenal music that follows.” Says Iyeoka.
Internationally, Paula is known as the Hawaiian songstress wearing the “Big Girls Rock” shirt, strumming her ‘ukulele all the way to Hollywood on American Idol. Locally, she is known as Paula, solo artist and a singer representative of Hawaiian culture in her music and daily life, but at the same time possessing a unique sound that is universally appealing. In the recording industry, Paula is a rising star who has been likened to a Hawaiian Lauryn Hill is endorsed as a fresh sound by established artists like Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, and Nick Hexum of band 311.
Chicago’s own, Regie Gibson, 1998 National Poetry Slam Individual Champion and renowned author of Storms Beneath the Skin has become a recent addition to the Boston arts scene. Gibson has performed everywhere from the Art Institute of Chicago to Literature Haus in Hamburg, fuses instrumentals, drums, song and poetry in a way that defies convention.
The Press Project based out of NH, blends hip-hop, soul, jazz and funk with an eclectic and poignant tongue twisting lyrical style. The seven members of The Press Project circulate massive amounts of physical and musical energy in a supercharged live performance spectacle. The Press Project has swiftly ascended the ladder of local notoriety and moved onto the surrounding New England music scene with force. The Press Project went on to highlight the Spotlight Music and Art Awards and open for The Roots, George Clinton and most recently, SouLive.
This show is clearly a must see for a Friday night out in Boston!
