MIAMI, FL, July 29, 2008 – Climate changes are expected to have a devastating affect on the environment and is evident in the increasing occurrence of extreme weather and natural disasters. The 2004 tsunami, devastations with droughts and floods, and disastrous earthquakes and hurricanes have all been a severe consequence of climate change. Although recent media attention surrounding global warming has raised public awareness and garnered a great deal of debate on the topic, there is still so much that needs to be done. Without drastic measures to mitigate global warming and other environmental maladies, the world will continue to experience the frequent occurrence of destructive natural disasters that it has seen in recent years. The collaborative efforts between Lambi Fund of Haiti and the Global Gender and Climate Alliance will raise the platform on the role of women in addressing climate change and deforestation.

Many studies have determined that while poor women are more vulnerable to natural disasters given socially constructed gender roles and behaviors, they can be key agents of adaptation to climate change. As stewards of their households and communities, women are typically more likely to participate in tree planting and nursery development while men are more likely to be involved in extracting timber. Therefore, gender equality increases the role that women play in climate change adaptation and reforestation projects, and women’s societal roles are clearly more supportive of efforts to address environmental degradation.

Women’s empowerment is now being linked to climate change solutions in which women worldwide are curbing the effects of deforestation. Deforestation has had a severe affect on climate change and global warming, and the empowerment movement will play a major role in reforestation projects to plant millions of trees worldwide. Lambi Fund of Haiti is also contributing to the movement through its partnership with the Greenbelt Movement and its existing gender equity and women leadership programs to plant one million trees on the island of Haiti over the next two to three years. For a country where less than one percent of its forests remain as a result of deforestation, the partnership will assist Haiti in making great strides in addressing its ruined agricultural sector, which has also been a pervasive problem in the country’s food security. Besides, these activities will provide poor rural women with economic independence and income to provide for their households.

Lambi Fund of Haiti provides financial resources, training, and technical assistance to peasant-led community organizations that promote the social and economic empowerment of the Haitian people. Their programs focus on sustainable development, community micro-credit, animal husbandry, restoring environmental integrity, and organizational and leadership training.
