A locally produced road safety DVD from the York Press Newspaper has won praise from the Department of Transport for its portrayal of the dangers of reckless driving.

The DVD entitled ‘Live Now Drive Later’ was well received at local schools throughout the area and misters now plan to use the DVD as part of a major new road safety campaign.

Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick hopes that the DVD will highlight the "very serious dangers associated with joy riding by young people who are not old enough to have had any lessons in how to drive legally.

The DVD is seen as an official response to recent figures suggesting that the UK is lagging behind other European countries on its road safety record. Recent research suggests the UK to be within the worst third of the European countries for road death figures, with criticism that the UK has failed to tackle the issue effectively between 2001 and 2007.
