Dr Adrian Bertolini, Standby Saturday Programme Director said “I find the situation untenable. It is economically, environmentally and morally unjustifiable that we have not learnt from the years of experience in South Australia. The container deposit program in South Australia leaves the rest of Australia to shame. We agree with Ian Kiernan, chairman of Clean Up Australia, about how disgraceful the lack of government action was. Some Australians have a habit of being unconsciously wasteful and it is vital that we have a uniform national container deposit scheme.”

StandbySaturday is committed to changing every Australian's view on how they waste energy. From Standby wastage through to waste. The need for National Legislation must be promoted.

As Ian Kiernan said "We are seeing an incredible increase in the number of containers out there, particularly plastic ones," and "Containers were up 12% last year on Clean Up Australia day."

South Australia — the only state in Australia to have a container deposit scheme — recovers 70% of its drink bottles, while the other states average about half that figure.

“They are ugly ever present litter. They are needless wastes of energy, recycling is the sane approach to reducing our consumption. In South Australia, a drink bottle on the ground is money in someone’s pocket. Its time to cleanup!"
