"The Mesopotamia Mess"

The Story of the British Invasion of Iraq in 1914

Rated "Highly Recommended" by

Book Review Publication for Libraries

(Redondo Beach, CA, May 13, 2008) – In its May, 2008 issue, the highly regarded Midwest Book Review rated InterLingua Publishing's The Mesopotamia Mess as "highly recommended," The Midwest Book Review is one of two publications that school and public librarians nationwide rely upon to decide which books and CD's should be purchased for their collections. (There are over 350,000 books/CD's published annually.)

The Midwest Book Review describes the book as, "Stating point by point every lesson that should have been picked up by the Americans before diving into the mess of Iraq, it's a somewhat saddening story of history repeating itself. The Mesopotamia Mess is highly recommended for anyone who desires a better understanding of the present through the past…"

"I was surfing the web, reading news about Iraq," says Jack Bernstein, the author, "and I'm reading about Sunni-Shia violence, an insurgency, the enormous cost of the war, and suddenly I realize that I'm reading about the British in 1918 and not the Americans in 2008. I didn't know that the British had invaded iraq during World War I; that they fought an insurgency for 12 years; and, that they occupied the country for 44 years."

More than a narrative, The Mesopotamia Mess tells the story of the invasion and its aftermath through the writings of journalists and soldiers of the time, such as, from the letters one British officer to his parents in the days before he went into battle… and from the letters of his fellow soldiers describing how heroically he died in the battle.

The Mesopotamia Mess goes beyond the invasion itself and details:

• how the minority Sunni's came to dominate the majority Shia's;

• how the politicians deceived the public about both their plans for occupation and the true cost of the war;

• how the British and the French agreed to divide the Middle East, ignoring the Mandates of The League of Nations.

The Midwest Book Review continues, "The American involvement in Iraq has rightfully been described as a huge mess of epic proportions by the press on this side of the world. "The Mesopotamia Mess" is an examination of how complicated messes for liberating forces going into Iraq is nothing new - and how the Americans have learned just about nothing making the move into Iraq from their allied British invader's history."
